We're Not Afraid

The Internet forever changes the way we respond to events such as the London tube bombing. International solidarity is no longer limited to statements from politicians. Symbols of defiance and resolution are no longer only found at ground zero.

We're Not Afraid is a website which appeared earlier today, and consists solely of image sent in from London and around the world of people holding signs saying, simply, "we are not afraid." Alfie Dennen started the site and posted the first image; there are now several dozen pictures, and the site continues to grow.

Update: It turns out that this entry is a top link on Google for ' "I am not afraid" London' searches, which explains the surge of comments. Welcome to WorldChanging, new visitors. Please take a moment to look around -- we're a global weblog focusing on solutions to big problems. We talk about the models, tools and ideas for building a better, "bright green" world.

Our goal is to let people know that, as bad as things can be, the tools for fixing our problems are available, if we're willing to pick them up.

John Norris:

Well, I live in the UK and I am afraid. I'm also scared that sites like We're Not Afraid encourage an unhealthy solidarity of superiority, nationalism and xenophobia - perpetuating a "we're good" and "they're evil" mentality that avoids the big picture questions of how we got here.

Chris:

Fear is the Mindkiller, it's what drives us to do evil things, denying fear is teh first step towards denying the Politicians trying to strip our rights away from us. Politicians know how to manipulate that fear so if you must be afraid be mindfull of what you are actually afraid of.

John, I didn't see much in the way of claims of cultural superiority or xenophobia in the We're Not Afraid site, only a solidarity that reached across political boundaries and said "we won't let this crime change who we are."

Do Western policies towards the Middle East need to be changed? Undoubtedly. But the people who did this are most assuredly going about trying to change them in the least-effective way possible.

John, Chris: You make a fair point and, yes, there are a few posts of questionable taste at the site. In practice, however, most people have so far exercised commendable restraint and good humour, which was the intention. It's certainly a better way to show their feelings without going out and mugging some unfortunates.

Just to say I'm not afarid

antonietta lanzarone:

I think that we ,all together, live in a piriod where the war is the leader, but it'll not kill us, because its arm is fear, but we are not AFRAID!!!

Karsten:

Terrorism would like to make as afraid, to stop our way of life, but they must and will fail!

So I AM NOT AFRAID:)

Cesare:

We will fight...always...against terrorism
!!!WE ARE NOT AFRAID!!!

It's a great site with honourable intentions and it's clearly sending out a message to the terrorists, and NOT to the average Muslim! Any Muslim I've met in London since the attacks have been even more outraged than the rest of us. It's a double whammy for them. They see their home town bombed and then they get eyed suspicously on the street.

What we need is a universal religion, namely Confusionism.

We're not afraid.. use- and sinless killing always the wrong ones makes no sense and sets no signs! In my opinion, less interest should do a little and i do hope, whenever, they'll stop these attacks against shuffle selected civilists and stupid murders.. But: We're not afraid! We're always looking foreward into the future and turn our faces watching the sun..

Terrorists, if you want to scare us, you're certainly going towards the opposite direction! YOU ARE NOT SCARING ANY OF US! If you are trying to make us believe that this is a religious war, well, we still love our muslim brothers...so...you are going to the opposite direction!

We are not afraid. We are walking around London. We are showing our support. If you are responsible for this are you afraid? You are the ones hiding. You are weak, you will not win.

Lynda:

I am sort of afraid but I still went back into work on Friday... I think I am more afraid today than I was on Friday.

Tom:

I live in London and, to be honest, we're all afraid. Travelling to work this morning you could see the fear and suspicion on everyone's faces, despite the good humoured responses anyone who took the long walk home on Thursday encountered. Today is business as usual and we're all getting on with it, but there has been a change here. I looked at the "We're Not Afraid" site and found that most of the messages were from people in other countries. Very few were from people like myself who live and work in London.

Lucy Hill:

I do not wish my heart to hate
Or dwell upon a 'what if?' fate.
I do not wish to scan each face
Wide eyed, darting, place to place.

So I will not.

I do not wish to lose my smile,
As I catch some-one's eye, as to work we file.
I do not wish to see only danger
In the glance of a total stranger.

So I will not.

I know we are all some-one's mother,
Father, sister, child or brother.
This is the thought that in time will replace
The thoughts inside the aching place.
So you will not

Change me.

With time, I hope to regain my trust in human nature...I refuse to let terror remain in my heart. Much love to those affected last week and may your God go with you and protect you. x

We will never forget how beautiful London is, it's a brilliant capital city, where good things happen. Glad to see the wwII celebrations carried on, we will defy the test of time, and no one can break us. United we stand and united we fall.

REJOICE IN YOUR HOLLOW

CONDEMNATION WILL FOLLOW
THE TRULY HEARTLESSNESS

OF THE HEINOUS ACT, YOU HAVE PERPETRATED

Leilani:

Hi! I'm 15, a christian and live not far from London, at first when i heard about these attacks i felt so afraid and scared, but then watching the news and watching all the older people come together in a crisis like this i was so amazed! I am no longer scared!!! Life is too short to be scared by terrorists like these! If you do believe in God or not, he will protect you in times such as these, the people that died, sadly maybe it was perhaps their time to leave the earth and go up in heaven, if you did lose a loved one please don't be upset, i'm sure they're looking down on you and smiling!
DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THESE TERRORSITS! TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG!
Poem for the lost ones families, that i found:
Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.
God Bless x

Kim:

I lived in London for twenty years, I know many dear friends who still live there.
I remember the fear of travelling and wondering if "it" would be today, and can only marvel at the courage of all those still making their journeys after Thursdays horrors.
True courage, true heroism is to carry on as normal even though you are afraid!
To those who committed this crime
"You have failed!"

I am not afraid!

Many have tried and they have all failed. On Thursday we saw again another attempt from those would seek to undermine all we stand for and believe in.

They will not win.

We need to stand together, hold a united front and pray for one another. We should also remember that Jesus asked us to pray for our enemies too.

In the space of 2 days we saw this country united in joy and then united in grief.

Our spirit is unquenchable and our belief is unbreakable.

Is it any wonder that this country is known as "Great" Britain?

Colette (Italy):

I lived in Cape Town, South Africa in 1996 when every American store/shop/resturant (Planet Hollywood) were bombed. I worked in the city and I remember how afraid I was walking to my office building and the absolute internal conflict and anxiousness I felt. Day after day this was the case until one morning I got to a point where I had to decide what to do with the fear because it was not possible to continue my life in that manner. I found my strength and courage in 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but He has given us a spirit of power and of love and of calm and well-ballenced mind and discipline and self-control".

I know you are afraid, I also know you have the ability, the power and faith to make a choice. I know it is difficult, but I also know that it is not impossible. COURAGE!!

I am not afraid.

Sal (UK):

To those cowards who attack in the shadows. You will never win. Great Britain is named so for a reason. London has survived the bombing campaigns of the Nazi's and remained strong and won. The spirit of our nation will never cease, I'm proud to be British and proud for what our country stands for - truth, justice and equality no matter what age, race or religion. Long live freedom.

Gonzalo:

First I am so sorry for the people of London, nobody deserve to die like that. But I have been tryin to understand why. There are many answers to this question. I also wonder why when people is killed by bombs in the middle east nobody get anger or sad, we just see what it comes to us easy, for example we do not see the criminal acts of the american and british army in the middle east, there are diying women, kids, old people everyday, but as we do not see, we do not feel. Every single life is worthy, no matter colour, religion, race. What we have to do to change it? Id wish I could do something right now, but unfortunatly I can not vote for president in the most important nations which rule the world and they rule it really bad. So I just can say I AM NOT AFRAID but also I DO NOT THINK LIKE YOU "RULERS", or "I AM NOT AFRAID TO ANY KIND OF TERRORISM, EVEN THOSE WHO KILL IN NAME OF THE LIBERTY" liberty whICH is just an interest of economical power.

So, lets put them in the same bag, and send them to the jail, which is the place where they belong.

Think about people, what do we want for the future, just to live in a bubble? is that what we want for our childrens?, to show them just a part of the reality?, Let's be fair with ourself and the new generations.

SO BE AFRAID OF THE REAL INTERESTS AND CAUSES WHICH ARE CREATING THIS STUPID WAR, COMING TO OUR HOMES.

BUT DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SAY THE TRUTH AND TO THINK DIFFERENT, THAT WILL BRING YOU LIBERTY TO BE FAIR TO THE OTHERS AnD IT WILL BRING YOU PEACE AND HAPPINESS.

THANKS FOR THIS PLACE!!!

Gonzalo

Why shold we be afraid?! We should not let terroists run are lives, yet we should be prepared for an attack! I am only 12 yet I an introduced to a world with horrible, dispicable people! I don't live in London but I am affected by Thursdays events just like everyone else. A lot of kids don't understand about things like this, so change this so they can do something about it! Don't let the next generation be moulded into pussy footers who play lip service, get them prepared and ready and if they have lost someone do something about it, don't sit back and let them crash and burn!

Good Luck to all Londoners, My condolences to all who lost loved ones. The best memorial to them all is not to let the terrorists win.

I am not afraid.... I am angry!!!!
with those that have no compassion and who seek to murder, maim and cause harm. The terrorist groups and people who sympathize with them should feel shame for their cowardly acts and fear for their souls, as what they offer to others will be returned a thousandfold...in this life or the next.
Terrorism should not succeed. It has no excuse. It has no God. It fills the empty space where love should grow. It deserves no understanding. Those that suffer at its hands, each one, are forever in our hearts. They are the innocents.
The terrorists, the guilty!

Jamie:

I dont know if anyone hinted at this yet, but TERRORism is designed to strike Terror into society. By showing and admitting our fear, we are letting the Terrorists win, and by doing so we are being people we are not. We did not bow down before the Nazi war machine, and we will not be terrorised by cowardly bombers who deliberately target the innocent in the name of whatever faith they supposedly represent (Islam is apparently most likely but I will not say for definite as it is not proven and I do not wish to condemn a whole group).

Jai, London:

I have always lived in London and love the city. I was devestated by the attack but I am not afraid of the terrorists. These horrific acts show these people have no soul. It is important for all of us - Muslim and non-Muslim - to show solidarity and make it clear that the terrorists can never claim that these crimes are being done in the name of Islam. These are cold calculating killers praying on innocent civilians.

Just! We're not afraid.
I'm Spanish, and I lived the tragedy of 11-M in Madrid, and when I saw what took place last week in London, lots of 11-M images sprang in my mind... How can a human kill a human? What are we doing wrong? I have no words. There were inocent people in that trains, in that buses.. people who only was going to their jobs, to meet someone, or just to have fun.. Why did these bad people stop their lifes in a second? Why? I feel terrible sad :(

Peter:

I am afraid. I am afraid of losing loved ones and never seeing them again because of heinous acts like this. I understand and respect the solidarity, but how deep and real is it? I agree with Tom (July 11, 2005 03:10 AM) and John (July 8, 2005 03:45 AM) who have stated 2 different points of view regarding being afraid. Fear IS the mindkiller and that is what 'they' want, but there's no point pretending we're not afraid when I think deep down a lot of us are. What are we trying to tell the world? Look around, so many of us are afraid of so many small things in our lives: fear of rejection, fear of insects, fear of losing our jobs, fear of dying... I think it's great that people are being strong and courageous, but it doesn't ring true to me. How can you not be afraid of losing loved ones, friends and your home? The people who do these terrible things aren't afraid - they've lost that which makes us empathetic and caring beings - they're not afraid because they no longer care.
Peace.

Roy Pinchin Sr:

Good Luck London... "Be not afraid" We are thinking of you here in the USA,
Their (terrorist's) days are numbered and they will be forgotten just like all that have gone before them, cowards always take the easy way out.
Good luck to Luton, Thank God they found the bomb at the station and took care of it, who knows how many people it would have injured. I lived in Luton for 5 years back in the 60's.....

Todd:

To the administration: I understand that flaming is against the rules and is subject to
deletion, but in regards to comments posted by this poster, I believe that this one of those
rare times that flaming is justifiable.

"...I'm also scared that sites like We're Not Afraid encourage an unhealthy solidarity of superiority, nationalism and xenophobia - perpetuating a "we're good" and "they're evil" mentality that avoids the big picture questions of how we got here."

Reply To John Norris:

Mr. Norris, I'm not the type of person who arbitrarily flames others, but after I read your
post, the impulse of flaming happened about two seconds after I read you post.

Dude, did your mother drop you on your head as a baby? Or are you on drugs?... Or perhaps both of the above?

They (the murdering terrorist) are most certainly evil.

..."Well, I live in the UK and I am afraid....”

Well goodie. You just go on and be afraid. There are billions that’ll take up your slack.

Todd, I'll go ahead and let that post remain -- not because I think the flames are justifiable, but because it gives me an opportunity to say this:

The murdering terrorists are indeed most certainly evil; but what I believe what Mr. Norris was trying to express was that, too often, that becomes the focus instead of thinking seriously about why people would choose to do this. If you want to stop people from committing such acts, looking for what causes them to do so is a rational response.

Now, for what it's worth, when I first looked at We're Not Afraid, such expressions of "we're good, they're evil" were not generally to be found. I chose to link to it here on WorldChanging precisely because it was pushing a positive meme and not more vitriol.

Peter:

Todd, I don't understand your post: ..."Dude, did your mother drop you on your head as a baby? Or are you on drugs?... Or perhaps both of the above?"... It really reads to me that you're quite ignorant of what other people are trying to say (see editors comments) and you believe that what you have said is spot-on. Well, we all have opinions Todd and yours is one of them. However, you can't expect to get your point across if you belittle others and make generalised global statements about "taking up the slack" for those who are afraid - that was really rude and selfish of you. Not everyone is un-afraid Todd, and if people are afraid, there's nothing wrong with that at all.
